In most of the cases these devices, due to cost and/or power constraints are limited with respect to the computational, storage, networking and energy constraints. Most of the standard technologies for messaging and data sharing were designed for environments that did not have these limitations. As a consequence, these standards don’t deal nicely with devices that undergo aggressive sleep cycles or communicate through constrained network such as LoWPAN and LPWAN. To fill this gap, over a year ago, we started a standardization process at the Object Management Group named DDS for eXtremely Resource Constrained Devices (XRCE) with the intent of filling this gap. DDS-XRCE targets environments where devices may have very little computational power and memory, such as an Arduino Uno which has 2 Kbytes of SRAM and 32 Kbytes of FLASH, may be battery powered and may communicate through constrained networks such as 40-100 Kbps LoWPANs and the newly standardized NB-IoT. From a high-level perspective, the key requirements that a DDS-XRCE implementation has to satisfy are (1) extremely low footprint – addressing targets such as an Arduino Uno platform, (2) extremely efficient wire protocol – inducing a protocol overhead of just a few bytes over the user data, and (3) support devices that undergo aggressive sleep cycles. This webcast will (1) introduce PrismTech’s proposal for the DDS XRCE standard, (2) demonstrate analytically its extremely low wire overhead, (3) demonstrate XRCE in action and (4) explain how it compares with competing proposals.

These innovations in networking have not been matched by innovations in the higher-level protocols used to collect/share data. As a result, applications that leverage these low-power networks are often crafting custom messaging layers. DDS-XRCE (DDS for eXtremely Resource Constrained Environments) is an upcoming standard that aims to provide a zero-cost high level data-sharing protocol for these constrained environments. This webcast will explain the unique technical challenges introduced by constrained environments and (1) explain why existing standards are seldom applicable, (2) introduce DDS-XRCE and explain how it optimally addresses constrained environments, and (3) provide a comparison with existing constrained protocols such as CoAP. Webcast Presenter: Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at ADLINK Technology Inc. As CTO he looks after technology strategy and innovation for ADLINK’s Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Platform. Angelo also serves as PrismTech (an ADLINK company) CTO, where he looks after technology strategy and innovation for PrismTech's Vortex IIoT data sharing platform. Angelo leads the strategic standardization at the Object Management Group (OMG), where he co-chairs the Data Distribution Service (DDS) Special Interest Group. Before joining PrismTech, Angelo was working as a Scientist at the SELEX-SI and FINMECCANICA Technology Directorate. There, he was responsible for the corporate middleware strategy, for strategic standardization, and R&D collaborations with top Universities. Angelo is a well-known and cited expert in the area of high performance and large scale distributed systems with 100s of publications for referred journal, conferences, workshops, and magazines. Angelo received a Ph.D. and a M.S. in Computer Science from the Washington University in St. Louis, and a Laurea Magna cum Laude in Computer Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy.
